Bad System Config Info Error In Windows 10

The Bad System Config Info blue screen of death is a common error that affects windows 10. It is caused by some sort of issue with your windows 10 boot configuration. The BSOD error will look like the one in the picture below.

When you receive this error it will appear every time during the windows 10 boot process which means you will not be able to get to your desktop and will be stuck in a bad system config info boot loop.

Don’t panic, I will show you how you can easily resolve this issue.

How Do I Fix Bad System Config Info Error In Windows 10?

To resolve this issue follow these steps.

1. Create The Windows 10 Recovery Disc

  1. On another machine where you can access the desktop, Download the microsoft recovery tool from the link below.

  2. Once the file has downloaded double click on the file, On the first window click on “Create installation media for another PC” and click next

  3. Select the required language, edition and architecture then click next

  4. Select USB flash drive or ISO File (In this guide we are going to make a usb recovery disc. Then click next

  5. Enter a USB drive in to your machine (Please note we require to wipe this drive so backup any required data)
  6. Select the drive your USB is connected to and click next
  7. The tool will now download the required files and prepare your USB drive.  This process can take between 10 minutes and an hour depending on your internet connection.

  8. When the tool has finished close the application and remove the USB drive from your system.

2. Boot To The Windows 10 Recovery Disc

Now we have created the windows 10 recovery disc we now need to get the machine with the Bad System Config Info error to boot to it.

  • Insert the recovery disc in to the machine with the error
  • Turn the machine on
  • Boot to the recovery disc (Some machines you can press f12 during the boot process to access a 1 time boot menu where you can select the recovery disc. You can also go in to the systems BIOS and set the recovery disc as the primary boot device.)
  • On the first screen select your required language and keyboard layout and click next.

  • On the next screen click on Repair your computer, Do not click on install now.

  • Once booted to the recovery disc you should see a screen like the one below

3. Check Disk For Errors

The first thing I like to do is check the disk for errors / corruptions. To do this

  • Boot to the recovery disk as per step 2 above
  • Click on troubleshoot
  • Click on advanced
  • Click on command prompt

  • A black window will now pop up.
  • In the black windows that pops up type in “CHKDSK /f /r”

  • If you are prompted with a (Y/N) type Y and hit enter.
  • Restart your machine

If your machine still crashes to the blue screen of death continue to the next step

4. Run Startup Repair

Using the recovery disc we made you can run a special Windows 10 start up repair. To do this

  • Boot to the recovery disk as per step 2 above
  • Click on troubleshoot
  • Click on advanced
  • On the advanced options screen click on startup repair
  • The windows 10 startup repair will now automatically start and will resolve any issues it finds, Expect this process to take 2 minutes to 20 minutes.
  • When the repair has finished reboot your machine.

Hopefully your computer will boot to your desktop and will not show the Windows 10 Boot Error Code Bad System Config Info.  If your machine is still crashing to the Bad System Config Info blue screen of death try the next solution.

5. Fix Master Boot Record “fixmbr”

It is possible that there is an issue with the master boot record on your windows 10 machine.  I will now show you a command you can run to resolve this.

  • Boot to the recovery disk as per step 2 above
  • Click on troubleshoot
  • Click on advanced
  • Click on command prompt

  • In the black window type in bootrec /FixMbr and hit enter

  • You should see the message “The operation completed successfully”
  • Reboot your machine.

Hopefully your machine will now boot to the windows 10 desktop, if not continue to the next fix.

6. Rebuild BCD

It is possible that there is an issue with the Boot Configuration Data on your windows 10 machine.  I will now show you a command you can run to resolve this.

  • Boot to the recovery disk as per step 2 above
  • Click on troubleshoot
  • Click on advanced
  • Click on command prompt

  • In the black window type in bootrec /rebuildbcd and hit enter
    bootrec command
  • You will be prompted “Add installation to the boot list?” enter Y and hit enter
  • You should see the message “The operation completed successfully”
  • Reboot your machine.

Hopefully your machine will now boot to the windows 10 desktop, if not continue to the next fix.

7. Reset Windows 10 Operating System Files

By using two commands we can reset the windows 10 boot files to default settings.

  • Boot to the recovery disk as per step 2 above
  • Click on troubleshoot
  • Click on advanced
  • Click on command prompt

  • In the black window type in DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and hit enter
  • Then type in the second command directly after sfc /scannow

  • When the commands have finished running reboot your machine

8. System Restore

You might be lucky and have a system restore you can revert to before the Windows 10 Boot Error Code Bad System Config Info

  • Boot to the recovery disk as per step 2 above
  • Click on troubleshoot
  • Click on advanced
  • Click on system restore
  • If there is a restore point available follow the prompts to restore your windows 10 system to that point

9. Reset System BIOS

It is possible a BIOS setting is causing this issue. Go in to your systems BIOS and reset the BIOS back to default settings. If you have a BIOS CMOS battery remove it from your system for 2 minutes then put it back and try to boot to windows.

Preventing Bad System Config Info Crashes

Now that we have recovered our machine from this blue screen of death crash

  • Keep Your Device Drivers Up to Date – Once a month check all your device drivers and install any updates you might find
  • Install Latest Service Pack – Make sure the latest service pack is installed for your windows 10 system. It is possible the service pack includes a fix for the stop code crash you are getting
  • Install Latest Windows Updates – Click on the windows 10 start menu and type in check for updates hit enter then click on the check for updates button. Your system will now contact microsoft and download the latest updates for your system and will install them.
  • Update Anti Virus – Make sure your anti virus software is regularly updated
