File System Error (-2147219194) is an error I have seen many times when opening image files such as .jpg .jpeg .png and so on.
The error message looks like the one below.
What Causes File System Error (-2147219194)
I have seen this error message many times at my work and I have managed to find out what causes the file system error (-2147219194)
The error message appears because either the file you are trying to open has become corrupted or the application you are trying to use to open the image file has become corrupt.
I also believe that there is a bug in Windows 10 Home Version 1803 OS Build 17134.1 which triggers this error, I found out about this bug here.
How To Fix File System Error (-2147219194)
There are many different issues that can trigger this error message and I have managed to work out exactly how to fix the file system error (-2147219194)
To fix the file system error (-2147219194) start by opening the image file in another application, if you still get the error then the file has become corrupted and you will need to run a file scan.
Fix 1 – Open File With Another Application
The first thing we should try is to open the image file with another application. To do this follow these steps
- Click start and type in photos then hit enter
- Try to open the file with the photos application
- Next try to open the image with microsoft paint
- Click start and type in mspaint then hit enter
- Try to open the file with the photos application
- If you still get the same error message jump to fix 2
- If you did not get the error message with one of the applications it then means that the other application has some sort of issue. Try to uninstall and reinstall that application
Fix 2 – Run System Error Check
If fix 1 did not work then it is likely that the image file or an operating system has become corrupted. We can run a system error check which should resolve this error.
To run a system error check follow these steps
- Click on the start menu type file explorer and hit enter
- left click on this PC, then click on the drive where the files are stored that you are having issues opening. In the example below I am using the “Local Disk (C:)” drive
- Select properties
- Click on the Tools tab and then under error checking click on Check
- If you get prompted by UAC click YES
- Click on scan drive
- This application will now scan your machine (as shown below) and will fix any corrupted files that are on your system.
- Once the scan has finished reboot your machine
- Try to open up the image file again that you were having issues with.
If you are still getting the error move on to the next step
Fix 3 – Upgrade Windows 10 Version
I mentioned earlier I believe there is a bug in Windows 10 Home Version 1803 OS Build 17134.1 which causes this error.
I recommend to upgrade your windows 10 version to the latest version (Feature Update) To upgrade follow these steps
- Click start and click settings (Cog Icon)
- Click on update & Security
- Half way down the screen it should say “Feature update to Windows 10, version 1909” click on Download and install now
- Your machine will now download the feature update, expect this to take around 10-20 minutes.
- Once the download has completed it will start to install on your system.
- The whole process should take around 1 hour
- When the install has finished the status should change to Pending Restart, at this time click restart now
Try to open an image file again, if you are still getting a File System Error (-2147219194) continue to the next fix
Fix 4 – Run Windows Update
I have seen on a few forums that installing the latest updates from microsoft also resolves this error.
I suspect there is a bug in the operating system and it appears that microsoft have fixed this in an update. To update your windows 10 follow these steps
- Click start > Settings
- Next click on Update & Security
- Now click Windows Updates and then click Check for updates
- The latest windows updates will now automatically download and installed
- Reboot your machine
Again try to open the image file again and if you still get an error continue to the next step
Fix 5 – Run Indexing troubleshooter
Another possible issue is that there is a problem with your indexing service on your windows 10 machine.
You can run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter by doing these steps:
- Click start > Settings (Cog Icon)
- Next click on Update & Security
- Now in the left menu click on troubleshoot
- Scroll down and click on Search and Indexing
- Click on Run the troubleshooter
Fix 6 – Run SFC Scan
We can run a SFC scan which will check your windows 10 operating system for issues and fix any issues it might find.
To run this scan do the following
- Left click on the start menu
- Type in cmd and click on the command prompt application
- In the black windows that opens enter the command sfc /scannow then hit enter
- The scan will now run, expect the scan to take between 5 minutes and 30 minutes depending on how fast your machine is.
- If you see the message Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them this means the scan found issues and fixed them.
- Restart your machine.

Hello, I am the owner of this site. I have 25+ years experience of IT. Check us out on the below social platforms.
None of these solutions worked for me.
Thanks very much! This fixed my problems right away!
I am the sole owner/operator of this computer but it won’t let me run sfc because it says I have to be an administrator running a console session to do that.
How do I convince it that I am the administrator?
The other 5 came up with nothing.
Also, even though I get the same error number, it’s not the way you describe specifically. Sometimes Photos works, sometimes it doesn’t…
@Albert Decker If you want to run a program as administrator, just right click the program and select ‘Run as administrator’. In this case, just type ‘CMD’ into your start menu and right click the icon that appears.
Thanks, just fixed it with a SFC Scan. after this error popped up with opening pictures.
Hi All. Good day. I need help. I can’t open my start menu, photos, videos, can’t even add another user account, system error when I pressed Troubleshooting. I already tried the cmd, PowerShell, system restore, and sfc scannow but they didn’t work for me. Please help me with these. I appreciate your response. Thank you all. I even tried all of the above steps but still not working.
Doing a new build with a m.2 drive and putting 4tb solid state in other than slot 1 or slot 2 of your motherboard and starting computer up for first time windows can’t see solid state at all but bios can well there is a fix just run a memory diagnostic will fix it and windows can see the drive now but will result in pictures will start to open slow and get worse over time sometimes pitures will not open at all with a error message than programs will start to lag and seem like memory is the problem and as time goes on will seem like motherboard is starting to fail now being this is all at start of the build you blame the motherboard there is also temporary fixes take some ram out put ram in other slots but soon windows does same thing …. I could be wrong in all this but happen to me with 2 motherboards I spent a lot of money on ram and getting more motherboards to try to get a good running system just putting this out there hope no one went through the Hell I did
