  • Click the start menu and type in cmd
  • Right click on”Command Prompt” and select run as administrator
  • If you are prompted by User Access Control click on Yes
  • In the command prompt window type in “sfc /scannow” then hit enter
  • The application will scan your machine and fix any corrupt files it finds
  • When the scan finishes restart your machine

Windows 10 has a built in application called CHKDSK which we can also use to fix corrupt files.  To run this application do the following

  • Click the start menu and type in cmd
  • Right click on”Command Prompt” and select run as administrator
  • If you are prompted by User Access Control click on Yes
  • In the command prompt window type in “CHKDSK C: /f” then hit enter
  • If you get prompted with a Y/N option type Y and hit enter (Restart your machine and the scan will start on system boot)
  • When the scan finishes restart your machine

Run a DISM Cleanup

By using a DISM command we can get windows 10 to download and re-apply some operating system files which include the Msvcp120.dll file.  To do this follow these steps

  • Click the start menu and type in cmd
  • Right click on”Command Prompt” and select run as administrator
  • If you are prompted by User Access Control click on Yes
  • In the command prompt window type in “DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth” then hit enter
  • The application will download the required files and apply them to your machine
  • When the process has completed reboot your machine

Re-Register The Msvcp120.dll

In order for .dll files to function correctly they need to be registered in windows via regsvr32.exe.  It is possible that this file has become un-registered and this is what is causing the error. To re-register the Msvcp120.dll file do the following.

  • Click the start menu and type in cmd
  • Right click on”Command Prompt” and select run as administrator
  • If you are prompted by User Access Control click on Yes
  • In the command prompt window type “regsvr32.exe /u Msvcp120.dll”  This command will un-regiester the file

Install Latest Windows Updates

Installing the latest windows updates on your machine can also fix this issue because the updates replace select operating system files.  To run windows update on your machine follow these steps

  1. To run windows update click on the start menu and select settings (Cog Icon)
  2. Click on Update & Security
  3. Click Windows Updates
  4. Click Check for updates
  5. Your machine will now download and install any updates that are available
  6. Restart your machine

Re-Install Application With Issue

If only one application is displaying the error code Msvcp120.dll is missing then reinstalling that application should resolve the issue.
