We Couldn’t Install Some Updates Because The PC Was Turned Off

In this article I will show you how to fix the error we couldn’t install some updates because the pc was turned off that you get when installing windows updates.

I ran in to this issue today on my windows 10 version 1903 machine “we couldn’t install some updates because the pc was turned off” Below is what the error looks like

This issue is usually caused by a windows update that was scheduled to install at a time when the computer was turned off, or the windows update settings have got confused and needs to be reset.

How To Fix We Couldn’t Install Some Updates Because The PC Was Turned Off

To fix the error we couldn’t install some updates because the pc was turned off you need to manually check if the update did install, if it didn’t you will then need to manually download and install the update. If that does not work we will need to reset the windows 10 update settings.

Manually Check Updates

The first thing we need to do is check if the updates did install correctly. Some times the updates installs correctly but still show an error.  To check if the updates installed correctly

  1. At the windows 10 desktop
  2. Click start and click settings (Cog Icon)

  3. Click on update & Security

  4. Click on View Update History at the bottom of the screen

  5. In the view update history page you should see “Successfully installed” next to every update.  If you do you can ignore the errors that you are getting.  If you restart your machine thy should go away.

  6. If you see “Failed to install” (Like in the screenshot below) then we will need to download and install these updates manually.  Take a note of all the kb numbers of the updates that failed to install.  In the example below it is KB3213986 and KB3213986

Manually Install Updates

Now we have identified that updates have failed to install we need to download these updates then manually install them. To do this follow these steps.

  1. Reboot your machine, this will clear any windows update pending tasks that might be running
  2. Now open an internet browser and go to https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx   enter the KB numbers of the updates in the search box one by one and hit the search button

  3. Download the update to your machine, the update will have a .msu file extension
  4. Once the file had downloaded double click on it, follow the prompts to install the update
  5. Reboot your machine

Upgrade To Latest Windows 10 Feature Update

If the above step did not work we can upgrade the windows 10 feature update to the latest version (Currently Feature update version 1909) To do this follow these steps

  1. At the windows 10 desktop
  2. Click start and click settings (Cog Icon)

  3. Click on update & Security

  4. Half way down the screen it should say “Feature update to Windows 10, version 1909” click on Download and install now

  5. Your machine will now download the feature update, expect this to take around 5 minutes.
  6. Once the download has completed it will start to install on your system.
  7. When the install has finished the status should change to Pending Restart, at this time click restart now

  8. Go back to update history (Start Menu > Settings > Update & Security > Update History) and all updates should now show as “Successfully installed”

Check Disk Space

Windows updates will fail to install if your computer is running low on disk space. It is recommended to not go over 90% utilisation on your C: drive and always have more than 10gb of free space. To check how much disk space you have free follow these steps

  1. Click start and type in file explorer and click on the file explorer application
  2. Click on this pc
  3. Now check “Local Disk (C:)” and make sure you have enough free space

  4. If you have less than 10gb free remove some files from your machine and try to install the updates again

Windows Update Troubleshooter

If you are still having issues it is most likely because the windows update system on your local windows 10 has an issue and needs to be reset. There is an easy way to do this as windows 10 comes with a built in windows update troubleshooter tool, To run it follow these steps.

  1. At the windows 10 desktop
  2. Click start and click settings (Cog Icon)

  3. Click on update & Security

  4. In the left hand side menu click on troubleshoot, then click on windows update then Run the troubleshooter

  5. The troubleshooter tool will now check your system, when prompted click Apply this fix
