Step 1 : Create A Windows 10 Recovery Disk

First thing we need to do is to create a windows 10 recovery USB drive and boot to it so we can run some recovery tools.  To create this usb disk follow these steps

  1. Download the official microsoft tool using one of the links below
  2. Windows 10 32 bit Click Here
  3. Windows 10 64 Bit Click Here
  4. Double click on the “MediaCreationTool.exe” file then select “Create installation media for another PC”
  5. Select the language you want
  6. Select the edition of windows 10 you have installed
  7. Click next
  8. Make sure “USB flash drive” is selected and click next
  9. Select your USB drive and click next
  10. The recovery disk will now be created

Step 2 : Boot To Recovery Disk

Next we need to boot to the USB drive we just created.  With most machines you can press a button just before windows loads and this will bring up a one time boot menu.  You will need to find out what this button is for your system (Usually F9 or F10)

If your machine does not have a one time boot option then you will need to go in to your systems BIOS and set the USB drive as the primary boot device. To get in to computer BIOS you usually have to press Del or ETC or F1, each computer is different.

Step 3 : Run Startup Repair

The first tool we are going to use is the startup repair tool. This tool will scan windows 10 and will resolve any issues that might be causing windows 10 stuck on diagnosing your pc

To run the startup repair tool follow these steps.

  1. Boot to the USB disk we created in step 1
  2. On the first screen select your required language and keyboard layout and click next
  3. On the next screen click on Repair your computer
  4. On the choose an option screen click on troubleshoot

  6. On the advanced options screen click on startup repair
  7. The windows 10 startup repair will now automatically start and will repair any issues it finds
  8. When the scan has finished remove the usb drive from your system
  9. Restart your machine

Step 4 : Rebuild Master Boot Record

  6. In the advanced options menu click on command prompt
  7. A black window will now open, type in the below commands one by one and hit enter
  8. bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

  10. bootrec.exe /fixboot
  11. Once all three commands have been run restart your machine

Step 5 : Fix Corrupt Operating System Files

If any windows 10 operating system files are corrupt this can also cause issues booting to the windows 10 desktop.  To fix corrupt windows 10 operating system files do the following.

  1. Boot to the recovery disk we created
  2. On the first screen select your required language and keyboard layout and click next
  3. On the next screen click on Repair your computer
  4. On the choose an option screen click on troubleshoot
  5. On the troubleshoot screen click on advanced options
  6. In the advanced options menu click on command prompt
  7. A black window will now open, type in the below commands one by one and hit enter
  8. chkdsk /r c:
  9. exit
  10. Restart your machine

Step 6 : Disable Automatic Repair Check

On system startup windows 10 detects if it needs to run the automatic repair check, We can disable this check and force windows 10 to try to boot to the desktop.

To do this follow these steps

  1. Boot to the recovery disk we created
  2. On the first screen select your required language and keyboard layout and click next
  3. On the next screen click on Repair your computer
  4. On the choose an option screen click on troubleshoot
  5. On the troubleshoot screen click on advanced options
  6. In the advanced options menu click on command prompt
  7. A black window will now open, type in the below commands one by one and hit enter
  8. bcdedit /set {GUID} recoveryenabled No
  9. exit
  10. Restart your machine

Step 7 : Run DISM Restore Health

By running the DISM command we can reset the windows 10 boot files to default.  To do this follow these steps.

  1. Boot to the recovery disk we created
  2. On the first screen select your required language and keyboard layout and click next
  3. On the next screen click on Repair your computer
  4. On the choose an option screen click on troubleshoot
  5. On the troubleshoot screen click on advanced options
  6. In the advanced options menu click on command prompt
  7. A black window will now open, type in the below commands one by one and hit enter
  8. Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
  9. Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
  10. Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  11. exit
  12. Restart your machine

Step 8 : Refresh Your PC

The last option you can take is to use the refresh your PC option.  By taking this option windows 10 will get reinstalled and you should not lose any data or applications.

I recommend to backup your hard-drive if possible if you are going to try this step. To reset your pc follow these steps

  1. Boot to the recovery disk we created
  2. On the first screen select your required language and keyboard layout and click next
  3. On the next screen click on Repair your computer
  4. On the choose an option screen click on troubleshoot
  5. Click on refresh your pc
  6. Follow the prompts
